THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS (1871-1947):

When one thinks back to all the black vocal groups and Quartets of the 20th Century, which includes the Soul groups of the late 1960's and the early 1970's. The Rock n' Roll groups of the late 1950's and early 1960's. The Rhythm n' Blues groups of the late 1940's and early 1950's. The Quartets of the 1930's and 1940's. As well as all the Gospel Quartets both Jubilee and Hard Styles.

One has to ask how all of this got started and who was the first. Well, all of this got started with THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS, who sang spirituals and this is their story.

Before I get to their story, let me just mention that in Gospel music, both black and white, four parts harmony groups are called Quartets. No matter how many members are in the group, if they retain the four parts harmony they are still called a Quartet.

This article is mainly about THE FISK QUARTETS and not The Fisk Choirs.

THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS were formed in 1871 at Fisk University (1866) in Nashville, Tennessee They were formed to help the school out. They were originally five women and four men, but they sometimes sang in Quartet. They were named Jubilee singers in memory of the Jewish year of Jubilee.

In their first tours, THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS were successful in raising $40,000 for the school. In 1872 they raised $20,000.

In 1873 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS toured Europe and helped to raise money for the school, according to the newspapers' reports, either $250,000 or $150,000. Fisk University had enough money to build a new building for the school which they named Jubilee Hall. Because of the financial success of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS, other black universities and colleges formed their own ensemble and Quartets, but that's another story.

In 1878 the original ensemble disbanded and a new one was formed. I have to mention that THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS were not a fixed group. Most of the members were the school students. Once the student left the school they were no longer part of the group.

Many members were in and out of the group unless a member was part of the faculty. That member could be in the group for years, but I noticed that later incarnations of the group were former students of Fisk University and could be in the group for several years.

Lets now go to 1899 when an important figure in the history of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS entered Fisk University. His name was JOHN W. WORK JR.

JOHN WESLEY WORK JR or JOHN WESLEY WORK II (August 6th 1871 - September 2nd 1925) was a tenor who joined not only the ensemble but the male Quartet too.

By 1898 the male Quartet became a mixed group of two women and two men. They were AGNES HAYNES - Alto, MABEL GRANT - Soprano, JOHN W. WORK JR. - Tenor, and ALBERT G. GREENLAW - Bass. In 1899 JOHN W. WORK JR. married AGNES HAYNES.

In the early 1900's JOHN W. WORK JR. was once again a member of an ensemble.

Two of the members of this ensemble are very important to the history of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS and they are: REV. JAMES ANDREW MYERS (February 21st 1879 - February 17th 1928) and HENRIETTA CRAWLEY (November 10th 1878 - March 25th 1968). HENRIETTA CRAWLEY would eventually marry JAMES A. MYERS and throughout her life always referred to herself as MRS. JAMES A. MYERS.

Between 1900 and 1910 JOHN W. WORK JR. was also part of THE FISK JUBILEE QUARTET. By the late 1900's THE FISK JUBILEE QUARTET were: JOHN W. WORK JR. - 1st Tenor, JAMES ANDREW MYERS - 2nd Tenor, ALFRED GARFIELD KING - 1st Bass and NOAH WALKER RYDER - 2nd Bass.

In December 1909 the above mentioned members of the Quartet made their first recordings for Victor Records. One of those recordings was the first recorded version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", which by the way was honored in 2002 by the U.S. Library of Congress in the U.S. National Recording Registry.

By the time the Quartet made their next set of recordings for Victor Records in February 1911, they already had some members changes.

THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS, in all their various incarnations, continued to make recordings for Columbia Records all the way up to 1927. But Columbia Records from time to time leased out some FISK JUBILEE SINGERS recordings to other labels, such as Silvertone and Diva, not as THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS but as THE BOOKER MALE QUARTET. That makes me wonder if THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS knew that Columbia Records did that.

In October 1915 THE FISK JUBILEE QUARTET started to record for Columbia Records. Their 1915 and 1916 recordings for Columbia have the members made up of JOHN W. WORK JR. - 1st Tenor, JAMES A. MYERS - 2nd Tenor, J. EVERETT HARRIS - 1st Bass, and LEMUEL L. FOSTER - 2nd Bass. MRS. AGNES WORK sang with them on stage as contralto, but I don't think that she was on any of these Columbia recordings.

In February 1917 JOHN W. WORK JR. was singing with the ensemble that was made up of JOHN W. WORK JR. - 1st Tenor, JAMES A. MYERS - 2nd Tenor, W.H. PATTON - Baritone, LEMUEL L. FOSTER - Bass, MRS JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto, MRS.JEANNIE HICKS LE NOIR - Soprano, MRS.BLAIR PANKEY - Alto, and SARA B. WRITT- Soprano. This would be the last time JOHN W. WORK JR. would be singing with the group for he was let go as the director of the group. He was replaced by JAMES A. MYERS as director.

By January 1918 the group consisted of JAMES A. MYERS - Tenor, MRS. JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto. H.E. or M.H. THOMPSON - Baritone, LEMUEL L. FOSTER - Bass, and HELENA M. LOWE - Soprano, who died on March 28th 1918 from food poisoning.

Before we get to the history of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS in the 1920's, let me just mention that THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS had at that time a lot of competition from other jubilee singers that came from other black universities and colleges across the country, as well from other black churches across the country. However, THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS were the most well known and respected in the country.

By April 1920 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS consisted of JAMES A. MYERS - Tenor, MRS. JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto, R.W. HOUSTON - Tenor, ALFRED CLARKE - Baritone, and THEODORE MOORE - Bass.

In 1921 they were JAMES A. MYERS - Tenor, MRS. JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto, CARL J. BARBOUR - Tenor, ALFRED CLARKE - Baritone, and THEODORE MOORE - BASS.

At Right: VERMONT TRIBUNE (Ludlow, Vermont), February 3, 1910.

By December 1922 they were JAMES A. MYERS - Tenor, MRS. JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto, CARL J. BARBOUR - Tenor, HORATIO O' BANNON - Baritone, and LUDIE DAVID COLLINS - Bass.

In May 1924 the above quintet sailed to Europe and by July they were performing in London, England, but they were back in the States in the fall.

In May 1925 they were back in Europe. This time they were in Paris, France. In June they went back to perform in London and they went back to the States in the fall.

In January 1926 the group gave a performance at New York Carnegie Hall. This will not be the last performance for MRS. JAMES A. MYERS at Carnegie Hall.

In late 1926 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS once again went to Europe. One of the places they went to was Italy, where the dictator Mussolini saw their performance.

About this time tenor and director of the group, JAMES A. MYERS, became ill and could not continue traveling with them.

In December 1927 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS once again traveled to Europe but this time the members were MRS. JAMES A. MYERS - Contralto, CARL J. BARBOUR - 1st Tenor, J.W. WHITTAKER - 2nd Tenor, HORATIO O'BANNON - Baritone, EDWARD H. MATTHEWS - Baritone, and LUDIE D. COLLINS - Bass.

The year 1928 would prove to be pivotal for THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS.

They were still performing in Europe when in February MRS. JAMES A. MYERS received an overseas cable stating that her husband James was gravely ill. She quickly got a boat back to the states. She arrived on February 16th. The very next morning, February 17th, with his beloved Henrietta at his side, JAMES A. MYERS died.

After the death of JAMES A. MYERS, MRS. MYERS became the director of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS. A position that she would hold all the way up to the late 1940's. Throughout 1928 and 1929 MRS. JAMES A. MYERS did not sing with the Quartet.

By June 1929 the Quartet was made up of JEROME WRIGHT, CARL J. BARBOUR, HORATIO O'BANNON, AND LUDIE D. COLLINS.

In August 1929 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS sang on stage at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California.

At Right: MONROVIA DAILY NEWS (Monrovia, California), April 10, 1918.

At the beginning of 1930 there were changes with the singers.

First, MRS. JAMES A. MYERS is back singing with them. Second, HORATIO O'BANNON is no longer singing with them. Third, two new singers were added, LUTHER KING - Tenor and ANNA GOODWIN - Soprano. This made the group a sextet and this sextet will be together into 1931.

An April 1932 newspaper article stated that Fisk University is going to disband THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS by 1933 due to lack of funds.

A later 1934 newspaper article also mentions that THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS were disbanded in 1932, but that did not stop MRS. JAMES A. MYERS from forming her own Jubilee Singers from former students from the school. So successful were her singers, Fisk University decided to fund her group with MRS. JAMES A. MYERS as director.

In November 1934 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS performed before President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The members of this group were MRS. MYERS, CECIL REEVES, WILLIAM COLLIER, ARTHUR BOSTIC, HAROLD PATTON, OSWALD LAMPKINS, and CLIFTON or CLIFFORD DYSON.

Now the members of her 1935-1936 group were MRS. JAMES A. MYERS, LUTHER KING, BILLY HOLLAND, WILLIAM COLLIER, EDWARD MITCHELL, CECIL REEVES, ARTHUR BOSTIC, and OSWALD LAMPKINS.

Lets jump to 1940 where MRS. MYERS directed and was part of a group that consisted of NATHANIEL DICKERSON, HERBERT RUTHERFORD, WILLIAM COLLIER, ARTHUR BOSTIC, OSWALD LAMPKINS, and CARL WEEMS. Her piano player was MATTHEW KENNEDY.

One of the singers, NATHANIEL DICKERSON or NAT DICKERSON, would in 1947 become part of the first integrated vocal group in the country and that group was THE MARINERS.

NAT DICKERSON was part of the group until June 1944. (See my article about THE MARINERS at this website)

Starting in 1942 THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS performed in (mostly black) military camps across the United States.

By March 1944 the group consisted of PRESTON CORTHORNE or CATHARN - Tenor, NAT DICKERSON - Tenor, NORTON EVANS - Tenor, ARTHUR BOSTIC - Baritone, ROBERT COLSTON LEGRAND - Bass, and MRS. MYERS - Contralto.

By April 1945 the Quartet consisted of NORTON EVANS - Tenor, JACK MOTLEY - Tenor, OSWALD LAMPKINS - Baritone, and ROBERT COLSTON LEGRAND - Bass.

With Word War II over, THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS could now tour around the world. Starting in October 1946 THE JUBILEE SINGERS took a six week tour of Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Haiti, and the Caribbean.

By March 1947 the group consisted of NORTON EVANS, RAWN SPEARMAN, MATTHEW KENNEDY, BROOKS ALEXANDER, SAMUEL FLOYD, and MRS. MYERS.

It is written that MRS. JAMES A. MYERS finally left Fisk University in 1947, but I could not find any newspaper report stating that. Let me just say that by 1948 MRS. JAMES A. MYERS was no longer associated with Fisk University.

With MRS. MYERS no longer associated with Fisk University, it was the end of a era for that school. They were no longer funding a Quartet, but they still funded the choir to this day, who are also known as THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS.

THE JUBILEE SINGERS (1948-1959):

No longer attached to the school, MRS. MYERS did what she did before and that was form a Quartet from former Fisk University students. Starting in 1948 MRS. JAMES A. MYERS formed a Quartet that she named THE JUBILEE SINGERS.

Like THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS, THE JUBILEE SINGERS were also not a fixed group, with members constantly changing. Now being an independent group, THE JUBILEE SINGERS had to compete with other independent Quartets and Jubilee singers from all over the United States.

By July 1948 the first incarnation of THE JUBILEE SINGERS were STARLING HATCHETT - Tenor, NORTON EVANS - Tenor, BROOKS ALEXANDER - Baritone, and SAMUEL FLOYD - Bass. (MRS. MYERS would sometimes sing with them)

In the early 1950's MRS. JAMES A. MYERS did what she did best and that is take the group on a twenty countries world tour. These tours were sponsored by The U.S. State Department.

Some of the places she had them perform were Africa, Casablanca, Algiers, India, and Tel Aviv, as well as South American places like Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, and Argentina.

Possibly starting in 1951, THE JUBILEE SINGERS were, by December, in Italy and in January 1952 were in Paris, France.

Along with MRS. MYERS, the group at this time consisted of STARLING HATCHETT - Tenor, JOHN ANGLIN - Tenor, CHARLES COLEMAN - Baritone, HERBERT STUBBS - Bass, and MATTHEW KENNEDY on piano.

Later in 1952 when the group was in London, England, and in October 1952 in Stockholm, Sweden, they consisted of MRS. MYERS, STARLING HATCHETT, GEORGE GOODMAN, ROBERT LAWS, DANIEL ANDREWS, and MATTHEW KENNEDY.

MATTHEW KENNEDY was with the group until 1954 when he became a faculty member at Fisk University. In 1957 he became the director of the Fisk Choir. A position that he held all the way up to 1986.

During the 1950's THE JUBILEE SINGERS were always changing members. At one time the group was made up of STARLING HATCHETT, ROBERT PERRIN-BRADFORD, GEORGE GOODMAN, DANIEL ANDREWS, and MRS.MYERS. Another time they were STARLING HATCHETT, SETH McCOY, GEORGE GOODMAN, JAMES WILSON, JAMES McFERRIN, and MRS MYERS.

In December 1956 THE JUBILEE SINGERS performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This is not the first time for MRS. MYERS, but may be the first time for her JUBILEE SINGERS.

By May 1958, besides MRS. MYERS, the Quartet consisted of HAROLD JOHNSON - Tenor, ELMER DICKEY - Tenor, JOSEPH EUBANKS - Baritone, and HERBERT GIBSON - Bass.

The above male Quartet recorded an album on Kapp Records that was released in March 1959. The album was titled "Adele Addison and the Jubilee Singers - Little David Play On Your Harp". The personnel listed on the liner notes of the album is the same as the above Quartet with the exception of Baritone JOSEPH EUBANKS, who was replaced by GEORGE GOODMAN.

This would be the last incarnation of THE JUBILEE SINGERS and for MRS. JAMES A. MYERS it would be the last jubilee singers to be directed by her. There would be no more Quartets after this. From 1959 to the time of her death, she was now in complete retirement.

MRS HENRIETTA CRAWLEY MYERS, aka MRS. JAMES A. MYERS, passed away on March 25th 1968 at the age of 89.

Let's not overlook the importance of THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS in not only black music history, but also in black history and a change in American music too. They pioneered Quartet singing not only in Gospel, but in secular music as well. They paved the way for all the vocal Quartets and groups to come both black and white.

Had Fisk University not formed a singing ensemble to help raise money for the school, other black universities and colleges wouldn't have done so either, and we wouldn't have universities and college trained Quartets like THE DEEP RIVER BOYS, THE CHARIOTEERS, and THE DELTA RHYTHM BOYS.

Had THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS not existed, I don't know in what direction vocal group singing would have taken. I, for one, am thankful that they were around.

One website mentioned that THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS recorded two songs for Okeh Records in 1927.
The two songs are: What Kinda Shoes You Goin' To Wear?/You Better Get Jesus On Your Bond
These two songs may or may not have been released on Okeh. In 1926 Okeh Records was sold to Columbia Records
and if the two songs were released on Okeh, then it would have been on the Okeh "race series" for black artists.

According to Disco-File, THE FISK JUBILEE SINGERS made three recordings for Rainbow Records in 1946.
I don't know if these recordings are the choir or the Quartet.
The three Rainbow recordings are:

723 - Dry Bones & The Old Ark's A' movering / I Wanna Die Easy
